Ramming People with Vehicles, Now in Barcelona

This does not contain practical advice, so it is not a self-defense tip but a statement of fact.

In October 2010, Al Qaeda, in its English-language magazine Inspire, urged its followers to use trucks as weapons. Also in 2010, Boris Johnson, then the mayor of London, ordered removal of barriers from London Bridge and other busy pedestrian areas including Tower Bridge Road, Kings Cross, Baker Street, Hyde Park, The Strand and Piccadilly because the barriers were “ugly.”

List of rammings of people with vehicles

London on 22 May 2013, Dijon on 21 December 2014, Nantes on 22 December 2014, Nice on 14 July 2016, Berlin on 22 December 2016, London on 22 March 2017, Stockholm on 7 April 2017, London on 3 June 2017, London on 19 June 2017, Paris on 9 August 2017, Barcelona on 17 August 2017

One would think that by 2014 for certain all cities in Europe would have barriers protecting areas with large pedestrian traffic from cars and trucks driven by ISIS or Al Qaeda followers, but no….

Finally, in June 2017, steel and concrete barriers protecting pedestrians were installed on several bridges in London.

Other cities still wait…. I guess in Europe there are many Boris Johnson-like aestethically-minded mayors who think such barriers are ugly and costly, that an attack won’t happen in their town, and should it happen they will lay some flowers, light candles and all will be ok.

More rammings to come….

  1. Locals knew it was coming. CNN quotes one of them, Angel Toscano:

“I knew this was going to happen for a long time,” Toscano said as he set up a rack of bracelets and laid out the morning’s newspapers, their front pages splashed with news of the attack.
“There are thousands of people here every day. It’s a very easy target. If you want to kill people with a car, this is the place to do it.”
