They had only their bare hands against a terrorist’s assault rifle, a pistol, and a blade — because of France’s Hitlerian weapon-control laws
“You risked your lives to defend an idea, an idea of liberty, of freedom,” French president François Hollande told four of the six men who fought the terrorist, at a ceremony held at the Elysee Palace in Paris.
“Since Friday, the entire world admires your courage, your sangfroid, your spirit of solidarity,” he said. “This is what allowed you to, with bare hands — your bare hands — to subdue an armed man. This must be an example for all and a source of inspiration.”
Now, about the French president’s proclamation that they “risked [their] lives to defend an idea, an idea of liberty, of freedom”: They didn’t risk their lives to defend France’s phony idea of freedom* — they defended their lives even though the French state denied them free people’s means of doing so.
The chutzpah of that whole speech about defending “an idea of liberty, of freedom” with “bare hands”! They had only their bare hands against an assault rifle, a pistol, and a blade because the French government, like most European governments, made it illegal for civilians to carry weapons. European governments deny people their natural human right to means of self-defense — in Western Europe by keeping National Socialist (Hitlerian) weapon-control laws, and in Central and Eastern Europe by keeping Scientific Socialist (Soviet) laws restricting gun ownership.
While politicians speak terrorists learn. The next attack will be prepared better but the targets (you) will still be disarmed.

There is not even real freedom of speech in France. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_speech_by_country#France
Ideal self-defense weapons are those that are legal to carry everywhere, do not attract attention, are simple to use, and do not require practice.

Self-Defense Moves
For your defense moves to work under stress they must be based on your natural, instinctive reactions, require little strength and limited range of motion, and be proven in fighting experience. To learn how your natural reactions can instantly defeat any unarmed attack, see the video Basic Instincts of Self-Defense.
Defend Against Weapons
To defend against weapons you have to know how they are used. Also — every stick has two ends … the weapon of attack may become a weapon of defense in your hand …To learn how the typical street weapons (club, knife, razor) are used by an experienced streetfighter and how to practice with them, see the video Self-Defense: Tools of Attack — Club, Hatchet, Blackjack, Knife, Straight Razor.
